This album publishes for the first time inedited passion cantatas of the benedictine convent “San Lorenzo” in San Severo (Puglia, Italy), played on an original salterio (Michele Barbi, Rome, 1725). The “Lamentaziones” were composed by reknown neapolitan opera composers of the second half of the 18th century, and they were commissioned as well as performed by the nuns themselves. Obviously, the nuns were gifted with high skills in music performance, as these compositions for soprano, salterio and basso continuo are highly virtuous. This album was awarded the “Pasticcio-Price” of Ö1.
This CD will give immense pleasure as well as historical interest. (Michael Wilkenson, Musicweb International)
“Sacred Salterio” is an happening: scarce and beautiful. … You will hear a mix of skillful intimity and hopeful world-weariness. Empathic women power. (Dirk Kruse (BR), BR-CD-Tipp)
We can only hope that more repertoire with salterio will appear on disc. (Johan van Veen, Musica dei Donum)
