This wonderful mottetto for the Holy Week was composed by the renown composer and music theorist Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna. He places three soloists at the center of attention: the alto and two obbligato instruments, salterio and harpsichord. The combination of salterio and harpsichord is particularly charming, as they are considered sibling instruments due to their similar construction and sound production. In their concerto-like dialogues, they surprise the listenerwith soundscapes that are confusingly similar yet differentiated. Listen to it on my CD “Salterio italiano”!
